Fatma II (La Petite Mulâtresse) — a hand-tufted wool interpretation after Henri Matisse, with carved high-and-low relief.

Made to order by our partner workshop in China using your chosen wool composition.

Soft to the touch, made to hang for years.

Product Details+

Wool composition selected above. Hand-tufted and hand-carved to order, with signature high-low relief at three or more pile heights, up to 25 mm. Hand-finished at the edges by experienced master artisans; one of one. Designed in the USA · Hand-tufted to order by our partner workshop in China · Made in China.

Care Advice+

Vacuum without a beater bar. Blot spills promptly; for anything more, use a professional wool cleaner. Rotate occasionally for even wear, and expect gentle shedding to settle over the first weeks.

Installation+

Every wall hanging includes 3 m (9.8 ft) of self-adhesive hook-and-loop Velcro, designed to support Hewn Earth wall hangings weighing under 8 kg (17.6 lb). Apply one strip to a clean, dry and smooth wall, and the matching strip to the backing of the piece. Press both adhesive sides firmly in place, align the strips, then press the piece securely onto the wall. Not suitable for dusty, textured, damp or freshly painted surfaces.

Shipping & Returns+

Free worldwide shipping. Sizes L and above use international oversized freight, with 8–14 days in transit after dispatch, in addition to production time. Eligible standard sizes may be returned within 14 days of delivery, unused and in their original packaging, subject to the approval exclusion below. Custom sizes and one-off colours are final sale.

Made-to-order pieces are not returnable after delivery once you have reviewed and expressly approved photos and a video of your finished piece before shipment, except if the piece arrives damaged or broken. This does not affect rights that cannot be excluded by law.

The artist & the material

The style, translated into wool

Portrait of Henri Matisse

Henri Matisse

French · Fauvism · modernism · 1869–1954

Henri Matisse made colour a language of its own. A leading figure in Fauvism, he used vivid, unexpected hues and flowing outlines to give familiar subjects a new energy. Portraits, flowers, landscapes and interiors became arrangements of colour held in a carefully measured balance.

His paintings bring people and their surroundings into close conversation: a striped chair, an open window, a patterned cloth or a vase of flowers can carry as much rhythm as the figure beside it. This collection follows that range, from intimate still lifes to expansive rooms and expressive portraits.

Why it works in wool

Matisse’s clear silhouettes and generous fields of colour offer a natural starting point for wool. Raised pile gives a face, a petal or a curved sleeve its own presence, while lower areas let a background recede. Carved edges carry the movement of his outlines, and patterned passages become small changes in texture. The result keeps the composition’s colour and rhythm while giving it the warmth and depth of a hand-tufted surface.

The craft

Made one strand at a time.

Every Hewn Earth piece is hand-tufted in a small studio using the same slow craft techniques that have guided Persian and Moroccan rug makers for generations.

New Zealand wool

Ethically sourced from small New Zealand farms known for their long-staple, carpet-grade wool — the only fibre that holds carved relief.

15+ hours per square metre

Every stitch is punched and carved by hand — no machines, no printing, no shortcuts.

Small studio, not a factory

Each piece is made by a small team, to order. Nothing is warehoused and nothing is mass-produced.

From Studio to Wall

Real pieces, made to order by our partner workshop in China. Every one approved by its owner from photos and video before it ships.

Why Hewn Earth

More than an art print.

Prints fade. Canvas flattens. Wool has weight — a physical object, one you can touch, that ages like a rug, not a photograph.
