Fernand Léger
Fernand Léger painted the modern world as he saw it in Paris after the First World War: machines, workers, city signage and people built from the same solid shapes. He outlined every form in black and filled it with flat, unmixed colour.
Why it belongs in wool
His paintings are already made of separate fields of colour with a hard line between them, which is exactly how a tufted piece is built. Each shape becomes its own raised block of wool, and the black outlines are carved so they sit slightly deeper.
