Alberto Magnelli
Born in Florence, Alberto Magnelli developed a language of vivid colour and carefully balanced forms. His early figures and still lifes gradually opened into abstraction, bringing the energy of modern life into arrangements of curves, angles and interlocking planes.
Working between Italy and France, he moved from the lively colour of his Lyrical Explosions to the weighty shapes of the Stones series and later geometric compositions. Across these changes, his work holds a distinctive balance: generous fields of colour meet precise contours, with each shape finding its place in the whole.
Why it belongs in wool
Magnelli’s clear contours and interlocking shapes translate naturally into carved wool. Raised areas give a figure or a curved plane its own depth, while lower pile lets the surrounding colour recede. The tufted surface softens the geometry without losing its rhythm, turning the relationship between colour and form into something tactile.
