Katie Raquel

Monterey Bay, California · Painter

Katie Raquel is a painter based in California’s Monterey Bay region. Working mainly in acrylic, she paints vibrant, illustrative scenes of the natural world: the flowers, birds, fish and marine life of the Monterey Peninsula, built from rich colour, intricate pattern and layered, mosaic-like compositions.

She is the artist behind the Carmel Plaza mural and a three-time recipient of Arts4MC Individual Artist Grants. Her community projects include artist-designed Little Free Libraries and food pantries.

Why it belongs in wool

Katie paints in clear, separate shapes: every feather, petal and patch of fur is its own field of colour with a defined edge. That mosaic-like build is how a tufted piece is made, one raised block of wool at a time. Her bold, flat backgrounds let the subject lift away in relief, and the fur and feathers she paints become something you can actually touch.
