Piet Mondrian

1872–1944 · Dutch · Oil on canvas

Piet Mondrian began with the Dutch landscape: trees, dunes, windmills and flowers. Over time, he pared those familiar forms back to lines and fields of colour, becoming a central figure in De Stijl and a pioneer of geometric abstraction.

His best-known paintings balance red, yellow and blue against black lines and open white space. The earlier landscapes and flower studies in this collection show another side of that search: branching silhouettes, luminous colour and a close attention to the structure of nature.

Why it belongs in wool

Mondrian gives colour a clear shape. In his grids, each plane becomes a distinct field of wool, with carved black lines holding the composition together. His trees and flowers offer a different kind of relief: raised petals, branching stems and layered horizons. Changes in pile height turn the painted rhythm into a surface that catches light, while wool brings warmth to the geometry.
