Henri Matisse
Henri Matisse made colour a language of its own. A leading figure in Fauvism, he used vivid, unexpected hues and flowing outlines to give familiar subjects a new energy. Portraits, flowers, landscapes and interiors became arrangements of colour held in a carefully measured balance.
His paintings bring people and their surroundings into close conversation: a striped chair, an open window, a patterned cloth or a vase of flowers can carry as much rhythm as the figure beside it.
